The season is hard enough

You run a planting company.
You shouldn't have to be a payroll clerk too.

Today, all of it lands on your desk — piece rates, minimum-wage top-ups, CPP, EI, two CRA tax editions a year, camp deductions, T4s, ROEs — pieced together by hand from a stack of smudged paper tally sheets off the block. One wrong cell, and someone gets paid wrong. That's the weight Overland Optimization lifts.

🧮

Spreadsheet roulette

Linked workbooks, fragile macros, one broken formula away from chaos.

⚖️

Compliance dread

Min-wage top-ups and CRA remittances you have to get exactly right.

📄

Paper from the block

Smudged tally sheets re-typed by hand, days after the trees went in.

Before the first tree

Your crew sets themselves up —
before they reach camp.

New planters do their own paperwork on their phone — tax forms, direct deposit, remote-site and expense declarations — guided step by step and checked as they go. You start the season with everyone ready, not a shoebox of forms to key in.

  • TD1 tax forms (federal + BC) — filled right, no guessing claim codes.
  • Direct deposit entered by the planter — no transcribing void cheques.
  • Remote-site (TD4) & work-from-home (T2200) forms, with the rules explained in plain words.
  • Their SIN, entered once by them — and locked up safe.
  • It all flows straight into payroll — zero re-typing in the office.

What used to be a week of paper-chasing is done before day one.

TreeTally field app

Your crew tallies on their phone.
Even with no signal.

Supervisors record trees, blocks, hours and crew right on their phone — installable like a real app, fully offline. The moment they hit data, it syncs straight into payroll. No re-typing, no lost sheets.

  • Loads your real crew automatically — no fat-fingered names or numbers.
  • Rates set in the office push down read-only — a tired supervisor can't mistype a pay rate.
  • Sign in by cell number — built for crews who live on their phones, not email.

New · Planters log their own

Entered once, by the planter.
Never re-keyed again.

The number that is the paycheque gets typed once — by the planter, at the source. Each planter logs their own trees in the evening at camp; the supervisor reviews, confirms, and locks. From the block to the paycheque, no re-typing and zero transcription errors.

  • You choose the trust level. Supervisor enters everything, or planters self-log while the supervisor confirms — same payroll either way.
  • The supervisor stays in control. A review screen flags anyone off vs the crew; adjust, fill in a no-show, then lock the day.
  • Nobody chases numbers. The office sees who's logged and who's still out — by name — before payroll runs.
  • Planters keep their own record. Every planter sees their whole season — trees and dollars per pay period — right in their pocket.

The planter's copy

No more paper over the season.

Ask any planter how many trees they've put in the ground this season and they'll reach for a damp notebook, a phone note, or a guess. When they log their own day, that record keeps itself.

  • Every day, all season. Trees and dollars per block, per set, per pay period — from the first day to the last.
  • It's theirs, on their phone. No login to remember, no app store, no paper to lose in the rain.
  • Same numbers as payroll. Not a copy of the tally — the tally itself. What they see is what they're paid on.
  • Fewer questions at the truck. "What did I make last period?" is answered before it's asked.

Across Canada

Built for silviculture companies across Canada.

Most payroll software treats a province as a tax table. For piece-rate planting it's more than that — the minimum-wage floor is calculated differently in every province. B.C. gives silviculture its own rule and averages across the pay period. Alberta and Ontario don't. We started with British Columbia and built it properly — Alberta and Ontario follow for the 2027 season.

British Columbia Live

Full payroll, end to end — including the silviculture piece-rate carve-out and its period-averaged minimum-wage top-up.

B.C. Reg. 396/95, Part 7, s. 37.9

Alberta 2027 season

CRA tax tables loaded and minimum wage tracked. Alberta's own minimum-earnings floor is in build.

Ontario 2027 season

CRA tax tables loaded and minimum wage tracked. Ontario's ESA hours-based floor is in build.

Federal CPP, CPP2, EI and income tax are handled the same way everywhere. Tax follows the province of employment, so a planter who moves between your operations is taxed where the work happened.

Employment Standards Regulation (B.C. Reg. 396/95), Part 7, s. 37.9

BC's silviculture rule (s. 37.9): a piece-rate planter must earn at least minimum wage for the first 8 hours, 1½× over 8, and double over 12 — averaged across the pay period. We top up only where piece-rate pay falls below that floor. A higher pay period can't offset a low one, so the math is run every period.

How it works

Tally in the bush. Pay from the office. That's it.

1

Collect

Crews tally trees on TreeTally — offline, on the block. It syncs when they hit signal.

2

Run

One click turns the tally into pay — piece-rate, top-ups, CPP/EI, tax, vacation, deductions.

3

Pay & file

Paysheets, reports, CRA remittances, T4s and ROEs — generated, archived, audit-ready.

Fits how you already work

Run all of payroll — or just feed your books. Your call.

Overland Optimization does the hard silviculture math either way — piece-rate, minimum-wage top-ups, the lot. From there, two ways to finish:

🏁

Run it all in Overland Optimization

Drop your payroll provider. Overland Optimization takes it the whole way — CPP, EI, income tax, paysheets, and the T4 & ROE paperwork. One tool, no per-head provider fees.

🔗

Keep your bookkeeper or provider

Already on Payworks or ADP, or love your accountant? Overland Optimization hands them a clean, ready-to-import file — no double entry, no re-keying smudged tally sheets.

Either way, the painful part — turning bush tallies into correct, compliant pay — is done.

Built to be trusted

It's payroll. It has to be right — and safe.

🔒

SIN numbers locked up

Every worker's SIN is scrambled before it's saved. If anyone ever got into the files, they'd see gibberish — never a real number.

🧱

Your company stands alone

Your information is walled off on its own. No one else on the system can see your planters, your pay, or your numbers — and you can't see theirs.

🍁

Federal & provincial compliant

Full CRA payroll — CPP, CPP2, EI & income tax — plus provincial rules and minimum-wage top-ups. BC live today; Alberta, Ontario & more rolling out.

📑

Audit-ready

Every run reproducible and archived — built for examiners.
